Meet your animal.

The boldest bird in the Canadian backyard.

Here is a small secret about the Blue Jay: those brilliant blue feathers are not actually blue. The feathers contain melanin - a brown pigment. What you see is the result of light scattering through microscopic air pockets in the feather's structure, a phenomenon similar to how a prism works. Grind up a Blue Jay feather and it turns brown. The colour exists only in the light.

Found from Newfoundland to Alberta across Canada's southern forests, the Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a permanent resident - one of the few birds you'll see year-round. It does not migrate south.

What it lacks in loyalty to the seasons it makes up for in personality. The Blue Jay can produce a near-perfect imitation of the Red-shouldered Hawk's scream - used to scatter other birds from a feeding area so it can eat undisturbed. Clever, resourceful, and loud: a very Canadian bird.

This kit captures that mid-flight moment: wings fully spread, the geometry of flight frozen in paper.
