The Woodpecker is a Pileated Woodpecker captured in its signature vertical posture - head up, body angled, exactly as it appears clinging to the side of a tree. A deeply Canadian image, rendered in low poly paper.

Intermediate level. 2 to 3 hours of build time. Pre-cut and pre-scored on heavyweight cardstock. No scissors, no printing, no experience needed - just patience and a steady hand.

The finished sculpture stands on its own with strong visual presence. The red crest, black body, and white markings translate beautifully into geometric form.

Part of the Poly Paper Craft Canadian wildlife collection. Designed in Montreal since 2016.

Every kit includes:

  • Pre-cut and pre-scored papercraft sheets on heavyweight cardstock
  • A practice kit: a tiny mushroom, to learn the fold technique before you start (a little bit tricky on purpose)
  • Step-by-step instructions in 6 languages (FR/EN/ES/PT/IT/DE)
  • Glue not included

No scissors needed. No printing. Everything is ready to fold.

Meet your animal.

The loudest carpenter in the Canadian forest.

At an average length of 46 cm, the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is the largest woodpecker in Canada - and one of the most striking birds in North American forests. With its flaming red crest and black-and-white body, it bears a resemblance to prehistoric pterodactyls in flight. It is widely believed to be the inspiration for the cartoon character Woody the Woodpecker.

The Pileated Woodpecker's drumming - the sound it makes hammering its bill into trees - can be heard up to one kilometre away, and sounds eerily similar to construction machinery. It excavates large rectangular holes in search of carpenter ants, its primary food source.

Those holes serve a second purpose long after the woodpecker moves on. Dozens of species, from flying squirrels to mergansers to fishers, rely on Pileated Woodpecker cavities for shelter and nesting. It is a keystone species: remove it, and the forest loses one of its most important architects.

This kit captures that characteristic vertical posture - the stance of a bird that spends its life climbing trees.
